Oakland Police Department Restraint

Following the Mehserle verdict last Thursday, the local corporate media decided that the OPD acted with restraint and if it weren't for a handful of outsider, anarchists, there would have been no problems at the protests that reacted to that verdict.  But Attorney Walter Riley, who was arrested by law enforcement, has a different message.  Then there is Oakland School Board member Jumoke Hinton Hodge who was also arrested for some reason.  Also a 69-year-old former school principal was beaten over the head and arrested.  And there was a journalist whose arm was broken by the cops and charged with some ridiculous, trumped-up charges.  Those are just a few stories.  We're also finding out details of the disgusting conduct of law enforcement in general, including the conduct of law enforcement in the jails where arrestees were held.

So what did a conviction, however weak, of a police officer actually do to temper the overwhelming power of law enforcement on our streets?
