Morrissey: Not Your 15-year-old cousin's alterna-rock sex symbol

But a sex symbol of sorts at the age of 48! Twice, during his show at The Fillmore in San Francisco on September 27, he stripped off his shirt; throwing it out to the audience the second time. The venue was very cozy - at one point I was within 8 feet of the man, and I wasn't trying too hard; quite a change from the last time (and first time) I saw him at the Summit in Houston around 1992 or so; I was about 8 miles from the stage back then, and quite awkward and insecure - a closet homosexual living in Texas and all.

None but Boz Boorer looked familiar in Morrissey's band; Boorer having been with Morrissey since about the time he shed his last Smith or sometime around Your Arsenal, but early in his solo career. His entire band was dressed the same and had about the same haircut - brunette and short on the sides - bow ties and vests - they could be servers at Martuni's on Market Street.

Some of the songs he played: "How Soon Is Now," "The Boy With The Thorn In His Side," "Why Don't You Find Out For Yourself," "First of the Gang to Die," "Last of the Famous International Playboys," "Sister I'm A Poet," "To Me You Are a Work of Art," "Life is a Pigsty," "I Like You," "Billy Bud," "Let Me Kiss You."

One of my favorites was "Irish Blood English Heart," where he switched the lyrics "I've been dreaming of the time when the English are sick to death of Labour and Tories ..." to "I've been dreaming of the time when Americans are sick to death of Republicans ..." But he didn't add "Democrats." Damn. Oh well, they can't all be perfect. Songs that is, not people. People can definitely all not be perfect.

O.K. that last bit was a comment of Morrissey's from the show.

My only observation regarding the crowd - who knew so many of Morrissey's fans were straight?

M.I.A. at the Treasure Island Music Festival

Love the new album, particularly "Paper Planes." That's what she was singing in this photo from the Music Festival on San Francisco's Treasure Island. I think she was doing this during one of the gunshot parts ...

All I wanna do is (BANG BANG BANG BANG!)
And (KKKAAAA CHING!)
And take your money
